FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Mount Union dealt Fredonia a 21-6 setback in the women's lacrosse season-opener at University Stadium.
Marjie McNamara had five goals while Ashley Bernardi and Danielle Rohrman had four goals and two assists each to lead the Purple Raiders, the defending Ohio Athletic Conference champs. Mimi Curtis made five saves.
Fredonia senior midfielder Audrey Yokopovich (Webster, N.Y. / Webster Thomas) had two goals, two ground balls, four draw controls, and three caused turnovers.
Junior Samantha Spiess (Fairport, N.Y. / Penfield) had a goal and six draw controls, while freshmen Alli Coon (Livonia, N.Y. / Livonia), Casey Villagomez (West Seneca, N.Y. / West Seneca West), and Arriana Smith (Sanborn, N.Y. / Niagara Wheatfield) each scored their first collegiate goal.
Mount Union grabbed a 2-0 lead before a free-position goal by Spiess halved the deficit with 22:45 left in the first half. The Purple Raiders closed out the half with a 13-0 run and then scored the first goal of the second half before Yokopovich ended the string. The Blue Devils had a four-goal run late in the game.
Fredonia is back in action at 1 p.m. Sunday when it takes on Denison at University Stadium.
