Devils cruise to third straight

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia women's basketball team won its third straight game, dropping Alfred State, 76-58, in Dods Hall. Jenna Einink (Westfield, N.Y. / Chautauqua Lake) turned in a 13-point, 8 -assist effort to pace the Devils. Anna Chiacchia (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) added 12 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists.

Katie Pitcher (Fulton, N.Y. Hannibal) and Sarah Sweazy (Rochester, N.Y. / Rush-Henrietta) added 9 points apiece, and Pitcher had 8 boards. Freshman Braelin Scott (Victor, N.Y. Bloomfield) came off the bench to grab a game-high 15 rebounds.

The Devils managed an 18-13 lead at the end of the first quarter. They dominated the second quarter, 20-8, which included an 11-0 run where they held the Pioneers scoreless for a five-minute span. Sweazy scored 7 points in the second, and the Devils outrebounded Alfred State 20-5, leading 38-21 at the break.

Fredonia led by as many as 23 in the third quarter. A free throw by Sydney Turley (Cheetowaga, N.Y. Cleveland Hill) put the Devils up 54-31 at the 4:52 mark. By the end of the third, the Devils led by 22 when Jayla James (Cheetowaga, N.Y. Cleveland Hill) nailed a three in the closing seconds to put Fredonia up 63-41.

After Alexis Grissom's (Jamestown, N.Y. / Jamestown) layup put Fredonia up by 24 -- the biggest lead of the game -- to start the fourth quarter, Alfred State ran off 13 straight points to make it a ballgame. A layup by Janae Gibson with 5:23 left to play found the Pioneers down 11, trailing 65-54.

Fredonia outscored Alfred State 9-1 over the next four minutes to put away the game.

The Pioneers (3-7) had were led by Skylar Shaulis with 16 points and Rayanna Anderson with 15.

Fredonia looks to continue its winning ways this weekend. The Devils play host to Cortland on Friday and Oswego Saturday in conference action.
