Devils take over in second half

BOXSCORE FREDONIA, N.Y. -- After trailing by one point at the break, the Fredonia women's basketball team blew out Cortland 21-4 in the third quarter to run its win streak to four games. Anna Chiacchia led the Devils with 13 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, and freshman Katie Pitcher had her first career double-double with 12 points and 12 assists. Jenna Einink added 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots.

The game was back and forth most of the first half. Tied at 16-all, Cortland nailed three pointers on back-to-back possessions for its biggest lead of the game to go up 22-16. The Devils collected layups from Chiacchia, Einink, and Justice Nauden to quickly re-tie the game, this time at 22.

Kristy Vitucci nailed a three pointer for Cortland, and Nauden collected and offensive rebound and put it back to close the first half. Cortland led 25-24 at the break.

Vitucci put the Dragons up three, 27-24, with a layup to open the second half.

The Devils then took control of the game.

Chiacchia scored the next three baskets, two of them on steals and coast-to-coast layups. Pitcher accounted for the next basket following an offensive rebound.

Rae White then nailed a three just ahead of the shot clock buzzer, then converted the first of three consecutive three-point plays for the Devils. When the dust settled, Fredonia rattled off 19 straight points.

Overall, they went on a 33-8 run that went midway into the fourth quarter. The biggest lead of 24 came with 2:34 left to play, with the Devils up 57-33.

For Fredonia, White finished with 4 assists and 4 steals.

Cortland (3-4, 1-2 SUNYAC) was led by Vitucci with 15 points.

Fredonia (4-3, 2-0 SUNYAC) takes on Oswego Saturday in a women's/men's doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. in Dods Hall.
