ERIE, PA -- A free throw by
Anna Chiacchia (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) with just over two minutes left tied the game at 53, but the Devils never managed to take the lead in a 61-57 loss at Penn State Behrend on Friday evening. The Devils outscored Behrend 33-28 in the second half after the Lions led by as many as 11 points in the first.
Sarah Sweazy (Rochester, N.Y. / Rush-Henrietta) led the Devils with 12 points -- all coming in the second half -- and collected six rebounds and a team high three steals.
Jenna Einink (Westfield, N.Y. / Chautauqua Lake) collected a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds.
Katie Pitcher (Fulton, N.Y. / Hannibal) added nine points and six rebounds in her collegiate debut, and Chiacchia dished out five assists.
Behrend inched out to a 12-11 lead in the first quarter before extending its lead to nine points, 33-24 by half time.
The Lions would lead by 11 with 4:25 left to play in the third. Fredonia eventually closed out the quarter with the final six points on baskets by Sweazy, Pitcher, and Einink.
A layup by Pitcher to start the fourth cut the lead to three, 47-44.
After the Devils tied the game at 53 late in the game, Behrend scored the next four points and hung on for the victory.
Fredonia shot 40 percent from the floor compared to 31 percent for Behrend. Fredonia was 2 for 11 from three-point range, while Behrend was 3 for 21. The Lions held a 53-49 edge in rebounds. Behrend was 8 of 16 from the line, while the Devils shot 3 for 9.
Behrend (1-0) had three scorers in double digits, led by Caitlin Carnuche with 14.
The Devils take on Waynesburg on Saturday in the consolation game of the Behrend Tip Off Tournament. Mt. Union downed Waynesburg, 76-40, in the opening game of the tourney.
