Devils fall in OT

ERIE, PA -- The Fredonia women's basketball team fell in overtime, 73-68, vs. Waynesburg in the consolation game of the Penn State Behrend Tip Off Tournament on Saturday. Freshman Katie Pitcher (Fulton, N.Y. / Hannibal) and senior Jenna Einink (Westfield, N.Y. / Chautauqua Lake) both recorded double-doubles in the loss.

Pitcher had 18 points and 11 rebounds off the bench, and Einink had 15 points and 15 boards. Sarah Sweazy (Rochester, N.Y. / Rush-Henrietta) added a 13-point effort. Sarah Keast (Waymart, Pa. / Honesdale) had five assists.

A layup by Pitcher put the Devils up 68-65 midway through the overtime period. Waynesburg's Andrea Orlosky then scored the game's final six points -- a layup and 4 for 4 shooting from the line -- to give the Yellow Jackets the win. Fredonia missed a pair of threes and a pair of free throws in its final three possessions.

The Devils got off to a hot start, outscoring Waynesburg 18-9 in the first quarter. Braelin Scott (Victor, N.Y. / Bloomfield) scored six points to pace the Devils in the opening quarter.

Waynesburg took advantage of eight Fredonia turnovers in the second quarter, outscoring them 25-15, giving them a one-point lead at the half, 34-33.

The third quarter saw eight lead changes through the first six minutes. With Fredonia up 44-43, Waynesburg rattled off eight straight points, and would eventually end the third up 53-46.

Fredonia came back to tie the game at 56 midway through the fourth following a layup by Anna Chiacchia

With under 20 seconds to go, Waynesburg had a 64-63 lead when Sweazy was fouled and went to the line. She made the first and missed the second free throw. Waynesburg got off a pair of shots in the closing seconds, but could not convert, sending the game into overtime.

Einink was named to the All Tournament Team. She finished the weekend with a pair of double doubles, scoring 26 points and grabbing 29 rebounds.

Fredonia (0-2) has its home opener on Tuesday at 4 p.m. when they play host to Nazareth.
