Late Naz basket trims Blue Devils

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- A reverse lay-up by Rachel Benedict with 1.1 seconds left gave Nazareth a 54-52 women's basketball win Tuesday over Fredonia at Dods Hall.

The loss dropped the Blue Devils to 0-3 while Nazareth improved to 3-0.

Fredonia junior Anna Chiacchia (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) led all scorers with 15 points on 5 of 10 shooting, including 2 of 2 from beyond the arc. Jadyn Abrams led Nazareth with 14 points while Benedict finished with a double-double -- 13 points and 14 rebounds.

The Blue Devils trailed by as many as nine points in the first quarter and were down 29-27 at halftime and 40-37 after three quarters. Nazareth pushed its lead out to 48-41 on a three-point basket by Abrams with 5:49 left before Fredonia mounted a comeback.

Chiacchia got things started with a three-point basket from the right wing off a pass by Sarah Sweazy (Rochester, N.Y. / Rush-Henrietta). Rae White (North Collins, N.Y. / Lake Shore) then made her first of two straight baskets, with the second cutting the Nazareth lead to 50-48.

Two free throws by Benedict upped the margin to four before White impacted the game again. She grabbed an offensive rebound which led to a basket by Jenna Einink (Westfield, N.Y. / Chautauqua Lake). The two combined again with 28 seconds left as Einink passed inside to White, whose layup tied the score at 52-52.

Benedict's basket broke the tie, but only after tight defense by the Blue Devils left Nazareth with little time to spare.

After a Fredonia time-out to set up a final play, and a Nazareth time-out to defend it, a short jumper by Einink rolled off the rim as time expired.

The Blue Devils are off until next Monday when they play host to Medaille at 7 p.m.
