'Trick' by Haynes leads Devils over Chatham

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Jacob Haynes (Whitby, Ont.) scored three goals and Luke Rivera (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) scored twice as Fredonia opened its 2018-19 season with a 7-3 men's hockey win over Chatham.

Haynes scored an even-strength goal in the first period, a power-play goal in the second, and an empty netter late in the third. Rivera opened the scoring at 2:37 of the first and scored the first of three Fredonia goals in the third period after the Cougars had closed the score to within one goal, 4-3.

Ethan Kirbis (Clarence, N.Y.) and Victor Tracy (Danderyd, Sweden) had the other Fredonia goals. It was the first collegiate goal for the freshman Kirbis.

Eric Bogart (London, Ont.) made 44 saves in the Fredonia net.

Daniel Cangelosi, Chris Lutz, and Chad Bell scored for the Cougars, a second year NCAA program. Chatham goaltender Brian Baker was credited with 32 saves.

Haynes was named the first winner of the Fredonia Blue Devil Booster Club Player of the Game, edging out Rivera, who was returning to action after missing all of 2017-18 with an injury. They were also the No. 1 and No. 2 stars, respectively, while Ryan Dunn (Rockland, Mass.) earned the No. 3 star with three assists.

The home-and-home series moves to Pittsburgh, Pa., on Saturday with a 7:20 p.m. faceoff in Chatham's home rink.

Fredonia returns to Steele Hall next Friday when they entertain Geneseo in a rematch of last year's SUNYAC championship game.
