CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The Fredonia men's soccer team fell 1-0 at Cortland on Friday. Cortland scored the game's only goal at the 34-minute mark.
Migell Ormsby netted his sixth goal of the season midway through the first half as Anthony Ruggiero assisted.
The Fredonia offense stalled early, without getting off a shot in the opening half, compared to Cortland's six.
The Devils picked up the pace the second with both teams taking 10 shots.
Fredonia had a chance late to tie the game when
Kevin Loftus (Lancaster, N.Y. / Lancaster) had his shot hit the post in the 77th minute.
"The second half we were on top of them and forced the goalkeeper into diving saves," said head coach
P.J. Gondek. "We hit the post and missed late in the game."
Fredonia also managed three shots in the final three minutes, but could not convert.
For the game, Cortland had the edge in shots on goal, 7-5; corner kicks, 7-5; and shots, 16-10.
Fredonia goalkeeper
Ty Bentham (Columbus, Ind. / Columbus North) was credited with six saves and allowed one goal. Sean Kelly had five saves in earning the shutout for the Red Dragons.
"Playing against the 9th-ranked team in the country we gave what might have been our best effort of the year," said Gondek. "We were solid defensively and did not give them anything easy. This has been a recurring theme -- lack of scoring, but this was very encouraging. We need to win tomorrow to stay in it,"
Cortland improved to 11-1-2 and 5-1-0 in the SUNYAC, while the Devils fell to 4-8-1 and 1-5-0 in conference play.
Fredonia visits Oswego on Saturday for a 1 p.m. start.
