BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- Down by as many as 18 points in the third quarter, the Fredonia women's basketball team tied the game late in the fourth quarter before falling to Brockport, 60-55, on Friday.
Four Devils scored in double digits, led by
Jacque Law (Lime Lake, N.Y. / Pioneer) with 15.
Jenna Einink (Westfield, N.Y. / Chautauqua Lake) had 11, and
Justice Nauden (Waterport, N.Y. / Albion) and
Sydney Turley (Cheektowaga, N.Y. / Cleveland Hill) had 10 apiece.
Anna Chiacchia (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) had a team-high seven rebounds.
Following a three pointer by Schuyler Laux, Brockport led 42-24 with 7:41 left in the third quarter for its largest margin of the game.
Fredonia scored the next 13 points with Law accounting for nine over that stretch. A pair of free throws by Brockport's Zaria McCullough broke the string and gave Brockport a 44-37 lead.
At that point, through the end of the third and start of the fourth quarter, Fredonia went on an 8-1 run to tie the game at 45-all following a layup by Chiacchia with 6:51 to go. All told, the Devils used a 21-3 spurt to fight back into the game.
With 20 seconds left to play, Nauden connected on a pair of free throws as the Devils pulled within two, 56-54. However, the Golden Eagles connected on all four free throw opportunities to hang on.
Brockport improved to 4-9 overall and 2-5 in the SUNYAC. Laux led all scorers with 25 and Emily Nestler had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Fredonia shot 18 of 55 from the floor, with Brockport going 20 of 55. The Devils shot 70 percent from the line compared to 69 percent for Brockport. Fredonia committed 15 turnovers to Brockport's 19. Brockport's biggest edge came from long range, as they were nine of 23 while Fredonia was three of 12.
Fredonia drops to 6-9 and 4-4 in the conference. The women return home on Saturday to take on SUNYAC-frontrunner Geneseo. Tip off is slated for 5 p.m. in Dods Hall.
