Devils unable to deny Knights

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Current league leader Geneseo rolled past Fredonia, 69-57, in SUNYAC women's basketball Saturday night.

Kelsey Poplawski led the Knights (13-1 overall, 8-0 conference) with 15 points while McKenna Brooks had 12 points, six rebounds, and four steals. Jacque Law (Lime Lake, N.Y.) had 12 points and Emily Lasher (Wilson, N.Y.) added 10 for the Blue Devils (6-10 overall, 4-5 conference), who also fell to the Knights on Tuesday night in Geneseo.

The Blue Devils took a 7-2 lead on back-to-back baskets by Turley and a three-pointer by Jenna Einink (Westfield, N.Y.). Geneseo pulled even 7-7 on a jumper by Poplawski and went ahead on a basket by Brooks, part of a 10-0 run. The Knights pushed their lead out to as large as 13 points before halftime. Geneseo's lead ballooned to 22 points on a basket by Lindsey Halpin late in the third quarter. Fredonia whittled the margin down to eight points in the final minute.

Einink's effectiveness was compromised by foul trouble. She had three fouls before halftime and picked up her fourth foul in the third quarter. She finished with eight points, nearly seven below her season average.

Meanwhile, Law moved closer to the 1,000-point mark and nearer to the top of the all-time Fredonia free throw list. She has 975 career points in her bid to become the 11th Blue Devil woman to reach the milestone. Her 328 career free throws trails only Becky Hebert who made 357 from 2010 through 2014. In addition, Einink is second on the all-time list with 112 blocked shots, behind Cheryl Kindzia's 118 from 2004 through 2008.

The game marked the Blue Devils' return to Dods Hall as their home floor after over 30 years at Steele Hall.
