FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia women's basketball team picked up a much-need road win, 59-48, at Oneonta on Friday. The Devils relied heavily on the starting lineup with
Justice Nauden (Waterport, N.Y. / Albion),
Jacque Law (Lime Lake, N.Y. / Pioneeer), and
Anna Chiacchia (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) all scoring in double digits.
Alisha Szumigala (Forestville, N.Y. / Forestville) added 12 rebounds and
Jenna Einink (Westfield, N.Y. / Chautauqua Lake) had seven points and seven assists. Fredonia received only 11 points form two players off the bench.
Nauden topped the team with 13 points, Law had 12, and Chiaccha finished with 10.
The first quarter saw an abundance of scoring, with the Devils taking a 22-18 lead at the end of one period.
The second quarter opened with a basket by Nauden, then a layup and three pointer from
Emily Lasher (Wilson, N.Y. / WIlson) as the Devils saw the first double-digit lead of the game, 29-18. Following a layup by Oneonta's Clara Culeton, the Devils ran off the next six points to take their biggest lead of the half, 35-20.
Nauden scored 11 of her points in the first half.
The Fredonia defense buckled down allowing Oneonta just six points in each of the second quarter and the third quarter. By the end of three, the Devils led 49-30.
Oneonta made a game of it in the fourth, finding it offensive rhythm with a 16-0 run to open the final frame, reducing it to a three-point game, 49-46. Chiacchia broke the momentum with a layup.
With Fredonia leading 53-48 with 2:15 left to play, Chiacchia converted another layup and Law finished with the game's, final six points.
Oneonta was led by Teresa Anken with 16 points.
Fredonia improved to 5-5 in the SUNYAC and 7-10 overall, while Oneonta fell to 6-3 and 11-5.
The Devils owned a 42-32 rebounding margin and shot 44 percent from the floor, compared to 31 percent for the Red Dragons.
Fredonia shot 69 percent (11 of 16) from the line, while Oneonta struggled with a 42 percent (5 for 12) effort.
The Devils travel to New Paltz on Saturday.
