BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- The Fredonia men's basketball clinged to a one-point lead in the final minute, but could not hold on in a 71-69 loss at Brockport on Friday. The Devils had led by as much as 25 in the first half.
Ian Helps (Bronx, N.Y. / Greater New York Academy) had 14 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Blue Devils.
Jonathan McDonald (Brooklyn, N.Y. / High School for Public Service) had 13 points, nine boards, and four assists, and
Kay Jackson (Ridgewood, N.Y. / Grover Cleveland) had 12 points. Jackson was five of 11 from three-point range.
Fredonia held a 13 point lead, 32-19, with 4:04 remaining in the first. They then went on a 12-0 run to take their largest lead of the game, 44-19. Helps, McDonald, and Jackson provided all 12 points. Brockport converted one free throw before the half ended.
McDonald had 11 in the first half, and Helps had 10.
Brockport flipped the script in the second half, opening on a 20-5 run to pull within nine, 49-40, with 11:19 to go.
The Golden Eagles tied the game at 58 on a three pointer by Hamed Shamselding with 5:31 left.
Fredonia bounced back on a 9-1 run and held a 67-59 advantage with just over three-and-a-half minutes to play.
Fredonia's final lead came with 20 seconds left, 69-68. Shamseldin converted a layup to give Brockport the lead. After a missed shot by Fredonia, Shamseldin made one of two free throws to close out the scoring.
Both teams shot 44 percent from the floor. Fredonia struggled with a five for 11 (46 percent) effort from the free-throw line. Brockport was 15 of 25 (60 percent). The Blue Devils dominated on the boards, 46-31.
Brockport (11-3 overall, 6-1 SUNYAC) was led by Shamseldin with 23 points and Justin Summers went for 15 points and 11 rebounds.
The Devils (2-12, 0-8) are home on Saturday vs. Geneseo. Gametime for the men is 7 p.m. in Dods Hall.
