FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia women's tennis team defeated Penn State Behrend for the first time in four years, winning 8-1. However, the matches were much closer than the team score indicated -- one, two, and three singles all went to tiebreakers, with the Devils claiming all three.
Anna Chiacchia (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) defeated Marissa Bowles 6-4, 4-6, 10-7.
Olivia Miller (Springwater, N.Y. / Wayland-Cohocton) defeated Kelly Miller 6-4, 4-6, 10-6.
Sarah Bunk (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) improved her singles record to 3-0, taking down Celeste Bentley 4-6, 6-2, 10-5.
Fredonia cruised in the final three singles, as
Chloe Karnisky (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua),
Adriana Speach (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / C.W. Baker) and
Avril King (Naples, N.Y. / Naples) all won in straight sets. Karnisky and King did not drop a single game, winning 6-0 and 6-0.
The only loss on the day came at No. 1 doubles. Behrend's Miller and Bentley downed Chaicchia and Miller, 8-3.
Bunk and Speach won 8-6, while No. 3 doubles went to the duo of Karnisky and
Mallory Mecca (Derby, N.Y. / Eden), 8-0.
Fredonia improves to 2-1, while the visiting Lions sport an identical record. Fredonia is on the road at Geneseo tomorrow.
