FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Coming off its best season in program history, the SUNY Fredonia women's team picked up where it left off, dropping visiting D'Youville College, 8-1, in its season opener.
Olivia Miller (Springwater, N.Y. / Wayland-Cohocton),
Sarah Bunk (Sayville, N.Y. / Sayville), and
Avril King (Naples, N.Y. / Naples) each won 6-0 and 6-0.
No. 1 singles
Anna Chiacchia (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) and No. 4 singles
Chloe Karnisky (Canandaigua, N.Y. / Canandaigua Academy) each won 6-1 and 6-0. The only loss was handed to
Taylor Rubens (Fairport, N.Y. / Fairport) after defaulting due to an injury sustained during the match.
Chiaccha and Miller combined to win No. 1 doubles, 8-2. The tandem of Bunk and Karnisky won 8-1 at No. 2 doubles, as did
Christy May (Buffalo, N.Y. / Sweet Home) and
Mallory Mecca (Derby, N.Y. / Eden) at No. 3 doubles.
The team is back in action at Cortland for a 12:30 p.m. start on Saturday.
