Devils dealt pair of 'Lake' losses

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Battle By The Lake series will come down to the final event of the season following Fredonia's SUNYAC doubleheader softball loss to the Buffalo State Bengals. The Bengals earned two points with 7-3 and 2-0 wins Friday at Blue Devil Field.

The losses dropped the Blue Devils to 11-5 overall and 1-9 in the conference. They also put a a serious dent in their chances of making the six-team SUNYAC Tournament. Buffalo State improved to 9-17 overall and 5-3 in SUNYAC.

Fredonia never led in either game Friday against Buffalo State's Allie Block, who pitched two complete games.

The Blue Devils battled back from a 3-0 deficit in the opener to pull even 3-3 in the last of the sixth. Lauren Pixley (Hamburg, N.Y.) had two hits and two RBI, including a squeeze bunt to score Khee Nance (Dunkirk, N.Y.) following a solo homer by Katelyn Dennis (Webster, N.Y.), her third homer of the season. The Bengals answered with four runs in the top of the seventh.

Mallory Mecca (Derby, N.Y.) also had two hits while Katie Yudin (Liverpool, N.Y.) was tagged with the loss. She struggled with her control early before settling down. Block, meanwhile, recorded 12 strikeouts in the opener and six more in the nightcap. She allowed four hits, including doubles by Yudin and losing pitcher Sam Seegar (North Tonawanda, N.Y.).

In the Battle By The Lake series, Fredonia has 15.5 points and Buffalo State 13.5 points heading into the SUNYAC Outdoor Track & Field meet next month at Cortland. Four points are at stake -- two on the men's side, two on the women's. Fredonia is the two-time defending champ.

Fredonia's next softball action is Tuesday against University of Rochester. Start time of the non-conference doubleheader is 3 p.m.
