Devils sink Lakers

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia women's basketball team evened its SUNYAC record to 2-2 with a 61-45 victory over Oswego on Saturday. Freshman Sydney Turley (Cheetowaga, N.Y. / Cleveland Hill) scored 15 points and senior Jacque Law (Lime Lake, N.Y. / Pioneer) added 14 and 9 rebounds. Jenna Einink (Westfield, N.Y. / Chautauqua Lake) had 10 points and Alisha Szumigala (Forestville, N.Y. / Forestville) added 11 boards.

Oswego opened the game shooting 1 of 17 before making its final shot of the first quarter as the Devils posted an 11-5 lead. Fredonia shot 5 of 11 in the first frame.

Following a three by Justice Nauden (Albion, N.Y. / Albion), Fredonia would open a 16-5 lead at the 8:30 mark of the second. They would push the lead to 15 points on a layup by Szumigala at the 4:43 mark.

Oswego would pull within nine points by the half. The Lakers final three field goals of the second quarter would come from beyond the arc.

To open the third, the Devils scored the first nine to go up 18 points, 39-21. Turley started the rally with a jumper, and finished it with a layup.

Oswego answered back with nine-straight of its own forcing the Devils to call a timeout, leading 39-30. The Devils came out of the huddle with Szumigala making one of two free throws, then converting a layup on the next possession. Fredonia would lead 44-35 by the end of third.

Fredonia maintained a nine-point lead with 7:20 to play, leading 50-41. From that point they went on a 9-1 run to put the game away. Law scored six points in that span.

Courtney Ameele led Oswego (3-7 / 1-3 SUNYAC) with 17 points, while Quincy Zimmerman had 11. Zana Dillard grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Blue Devils, now 4-6 overall,  hit the books next week for finals. Their next game is Dec. 30th at Nazareth.
