FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia women's basketball team dropped a 65-52 decision to Cortland in Steele Hall on Saturday.
Jacque Law (Lime Lake, N.Y. / Pioneer) and
Jenna Einink (Westfield, N.Y. /Chautauqua Lake) had 11 points apiece and
Alisha Szumigala (Forestville, N.Y. / Forestville) grabbed 10 rebounds for the Devils.
Cortland (3-4 / 3-0 SUNYAC) took the early lead. With the Dragons up 8-6, Fredonia's
Emily Lasher (Wilson, N.Y. / Wilson) converted a layup and Law connected on a three pointer to give Devils an 11-8 lead after one quarter.
Fredonia would match its biggest lead two minutes into the second. Back-to-back layups by Einink and Lasher gave Fredonia a 15-12 lead. After trading baskets, Cortland rattled off 10 straight points to go up 24-17.
The Dragons held a 31-23 lead at the half.
Cortland scored the first seven points of the second half to go up 13. They would gain their biggest lead of 25 points following a 22-4 run. With 6:43 left to play, they led 60-35.
Fredonia tried to make a game of it, going on an 11-0 run of their own. A Cortland three briefly broke the momentum before
Justice Nauden (Waterport, N.Y. / Albion) hit threes on back-to-back possessions to cut the lead to eleven, 63-52.
Both teams collected 35 rebounds for the game. Fredonia had 16 turnovers to Cortland's 19. Cortland's biggest advantage came from the floor, where they shot 45 percent compared to 32 percent for Fredonia.
The game saw very few fouls. Cortland committed only 11, and the Devils were just 2 of 5 from the line. Cortland was 6 of 11 from the charity stripe with Fredonia committing 14 fouls for the game.
The Devils (3-6 / 1-2 SUNYAC) play host to Oswego at 1:00 in Steele Hall on Saturday.
