BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Fredonia closed out the 2017 season with an inspirational 5-3 win over Oswego State in the consolation round of the SUNYAC Women's Tennis Tournament.
Singles winners were sophomore junior
Olivia Miller (Springwater, N.Y.) at No. 2, junior
Adriana Speach (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) at No. 5, and junior
Avril King (Naples, N.Y.) at No. 6.Â
Miller and sophomore
Anna Chiacchia (Hamburg, N.Y.), and King and junior
Mallory Mecca (Derby, N.Y.) won their doubles matches at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively.
Miller's win at No. 2 was the deciding point and gave her 11 wins in 2017, a new Fredonia single-season record. It was her 26th career win, also a Fredonia team mark.
"The women fought through adversity," Blue Devil Head Coach
Greg Catalano said. "They played three times in three consecutive days (and they) were playing without
Sarah Bunk (Sayville, N.Y.), our sensational freshman."
Because of an academic commitment, Bunk did not play singles Friday at Geneseo nor singles and doubles Saturday and Sunday in Binghamton. She finished the season 10-1 in singles and 10-1 in doubles. Her only singles loss came when she was forced to retire Friday at Geneseo.
Sunday also marked the final collegiate match for the lone senior, captain
Chloe Karnisky (Canandaigua, N.Y.). She had a 6-3 singles record in 2017 and a 17-8 career record, tied for seventh on the team's all-time list. Moving up into a tie for fourth on the career singles list was Chiacchia, who has a 19-4 record in two seasons.
The Blue Devils finished 10-3 overall for the second straight season.
"This was by far our most impressive win of the season," Catalano said. "I'm very proud of the women."
