BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Fredonia dropped a 5-2 quarterfinal match to Cortland at the SUNYAC Women's Tennis championships at the Binghamton Tennis Center.
Avril King (Naples, N.Y.), a junior, was a double winner for the Blue Devils (9-3). She defeated Jenna Bellair 7-5, 6-2 in their No. 6 singles match. King teamed with junior
Mallory Mecca (Derby, N.Y.) to defeat Bellair and Hope Biersach 8-5 at No. 3 singles.
The best-to-five format drew to a close before junior
Olivia Miller (Springwater, N.Y.) was able to close out a win at No. 2 singles. The win would have added to Miller's school-record career total -- she sits at 25 singles wins -- and would have been her 11th singles win this season, a new single-season school record.
Miller will get one more chance at the record Sunday when the Blue Devils close their season with a consolation match at 8 a.m. against either Oswego or New Paltz.
Fredonia was without No. 3 singles player, freshman
Sarah Bunk (Sayville, N.Y.), who was unable to make the trip in order to honor an academic commitment Saturday on the Fredonia campus. Bunk, too, has a 10-1 singles mark -- tying Miller and sophomore teammate
Anna Chiacchia (Hamburg, N.Y.) for the school record. Chiacchia set her part of the record last season.
In addition, Bunk has a 10-1 doubles record this season.
