Blue Devils fall to Stevenson in overtime

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Stevenson's Mike Davis scored late in overtime to lift his team to a 5-4 victory Friday over the Fredonia Blue Devils in non-conference men's hockey.

Davis's goal came with 16 seconds left in the see-saw game in which neither team led by more than one goal.

It was the second goal and third poing of the game by Davis. Jacob Haynes (Whitby, Ont.) had two goals while Jimmy Morgan (Highlands Ranch, Col.) and Todd Schauss (Terryville, Conn.) each had a goal and an assist for Fredonia.

The teams traded goals in the first period with Fredonia's Schauss knotting the game at 1-1 and Morgan making it 2-1 when in tapped in a rebound during a power play. The lead lasted only 49 seconds before Stevenson's Christian Ripley scored to forge a 2-2 tie.

A power-play goal by Davis late in the second period temporarily gave Stevenson momentum. Haynes countered with his first goal -- and fourth of the season -- with 21 seconds left in the period.

Troy Sutherland put Stevenson back on top early in the second period. Haynes finished Fredonia's scoring with a power-play goal midway through the period.

Davis's game-winner came after a teammate's pass sent him in alone on Fredonia goaltender Chris Paulin (Lockport, N.Y.), who was making his first appearance in goal this season. Paulin made 25 saves.

Fredonia outshot Stevenson 42-30 yet managed just two goals on 11 power-play chances.

The second game in the two-game weekend series is set for 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
