FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The
Fredonia men's basketball team
dropped a 70-62
SUNYAC contest to
Oneonta on Saturday.
Reserve
Nicc Johnson (Buffalo/St. Mary's) turned in his first double-double as a Blue Devil, dropping 19 points and grabbing 10 rebounds to go along with a team-high three steals.
Brandon Hodge (Brentwood/Central Islip) added 15 points and
Richard De La Cruz (Washington Heights/Norman Thomas) added 10 points.
The loss dropped the Devils to 5-6 in the conference and 8-10 overall.
Oneonta got 20 points from
Mikey Mcelroy and 19 points and 12 rebounds from Lawrence Coleman.
The teams traded leads in the early going.
Oneonta scored the first five points before the Devils ran off the next eight. De La Cruz had a pair of
layups and Hodge and
Kareem Brown each scored a bucket to jumpstart the Fredonia offense.
Oneonta then took a 13-8 lead scoring the next eight points.
Oneonta would lead by as many as eight points, 20-12, with 6:49 left in the first half. They matched that lead following a layup by
Mcelroy with 2:42 left, going up 28-20.
They led 32-26 at the half.
Fredonia clawed back into the game. A three pointer by Johnson gave the Devils their first lead of the second half, 39-38. Johnson hit a pair of free throws on the next possession to up the lead to four.
The teams tied things at 44 before
Fredonia regained the lead on a layup by Johnson.
Then with
Fredonia leading 50-46, at the 9:03 mark, the Red Dragons took control on a 14-0 run to go up ten, 60-50.
Fredonia would get no closer than six points the rest of the way.
Oneonta shot 50 percent (21 for 42) for the game, including 56 percent in the second half. Fredonia hit 39 percent (24 for 62) for the game. Oneonta had a 36-31 edge on the boards, and were aided by 31 fouls committed by the hosts. They shot 27 of 40 from the line (68 percent), while Fredonia was 11 of 17 (65 percent).
The Devils travel to Brockport on Tuesday before returning home next Saturday vs. Buffalo State.
