The Fredonia women's tennis team topped the D'Youville Spartans 8-1 in a Friday home match under the lights of Steele Hall in an Athletes Supporting Athletes night. Â
Starting at first doubles for the first time this season, the duo of senior Phoebe Langdon (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) and sophomore Christine Thomas (Ransomville, N.Y. / Niagara Wheatfield) fell 8-6 despite several back and forth battles for the lead. Â
The second and third doubles teams, despite their lack of prior experience as pairs, posted winning scores. Senior Leanne Hofstead (Liverpool, N.Y. / Liverpool) and sophomore Mallory Mecca (Derby, N.Y. / Eden) downed their challengers for an 8-4 victory. At third doubles, senior Stephanie Ashodian (Rochester, N.Y. / Hilton) and freshman Avril King (Naples, N.Y./ Naples) put away their opponents, 8-1. Â
The singles matches were dominated by Fredonia. Starting in her first match since coming back from injury, sophomore Olivia Miller (Springwater, N.Y. / Wayland-Cohocton) shut down her first singles challenger 6-0, 6-0. At second singles, senior Chloe Cohen (West Hempstead, N.Y. / West Hempstead) posted an impressive 6-1, 6-0 victory. Â
At third singles, freshman Anna Chiacchia (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) improved her record to 7-1 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Â
Senior Halee Dickinson (Brockport, N.Y./ Brockport) blew past her opponent 6-1, 6-2 at fourth singles. Fifth singles featured junior Chloe Karnisky (Canandaigua, N.Y. / Canandaigua Academy), who won 6-0, 6-0.
Adriana Speach (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / C.W. Baker), at sixth singles, finished her match with a 6-0, 6-2 showing. Â
The Devils improve to 6-2 and are back in action tomorrow at noon at home against Oswego for their final SUNYAC matchup.
