Blue Devils soar past Brockport

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia men's soccer defeated Brockport, 3-2, on Friday afternoon thanks to a pair of goals from Jimmy Ritchie (East Aurora, N.Y.) and a goal and assist from Bryan Sibble (Liverpool, N.Y.).

Brockport (1-4-1) struck first six minutes into the game on a goal by Quintin Volpe.

Two minutes later, Fredonia's Ryan Keller (East Aurora, N.Y.) made a beautiful cross to Brian Theuerkauf (Lancaster, N.Y.) who missed just over top of the crossbar which would have tied the game.

In the 40th minute, Fredonia got on the board when Sibble took a free kick from about 30 yards out and sent it past the Brockport goaltender just before halftime to even the score up 1-1.

Two minutes into the second half, Ritchie redirected a Sibble shot within the Brockport goalie box to put the Blue Devils up 2-1. Sibble was credited with the assist.

In the 49th minute, Ritchie struck again. Parker Healy (East Aurora, N.Y.) put two shots on goal and was tangled up with the Brockport goalie. Ritchie was in the right place at the right time. The ball deflected to him and he buried another goal to put Fredonia up 3-1.

Later in the half, a would-be-Healy goal from inside the box was waved off as the Blue Devils kept the pressure on.

With five minutes left in the game, Brockport's Chris Ayherne scored to bring the score to 3-2. From that point on, the Blue Devil defense stepped up, clearing the ball out of their own territory several times to halt a Golden Eagle comeback effort.

Goaltender Ty Bentham (Columbus, Ind. / Columbus North) made three saves while allowing both goals for the Blue Devils. Ryan Cassidy made four saves and allowed three goals for Brockport.

The win brings Fredonia's record to 6-1-1 and 1-0-0 in the SUNYAC. The Blue Devils return to action tomorrow at home against Geneseo at 1:00 p.m.
