FREDONIA, N.Y. – Fredonia jumped to an early lead and held on for a rain-abbreviated 5-2 non-conference baseball win Wednesday over Hilbert.
Liam Kelly (Buffalo, N.Y./Bishop Timon) was in the middle of all three Fredonia scoring innings. He reached base four straight times: an RBI double in the first and walks in the second, fourth, and sixth innings. His bases-loaded walk in the sixth forced in a run.
Ciro Frontale (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) was also in the middle of all the scoring. He walked in the first, went to second on a balk, and scored on Kelly's double. Frontale rapped a two-run single to right in the second. He also singled between third and short in the sixth.
Quinn Danahy (Buffalo, N.Y./Bishop Timon) and
Alexio Medina (Alden, N.Y./Iroquois) each had a pair of singles. Medina also scored two runs.
The starter and first of seven pitchers for Fredonia,
Zachary Jordon (Akron, N.Y./Akron) pitched a scoreless first inning and was credited with the win based on the seldom-used pre-determination rule. Fredonia Head Coach
Matt Palisin notified the official scorer before the game he was using a different pitcher every inning. Jordon left as the pitcher of record with a 1-0 lead.
Hilbert never pulled even. The game was stopped in the top of the seventh because of rain. Jordon improved to 2-2.
Justin Hulbert (0-2) took the loss for Hilbert. Anthony Wurstner was the top hitter for the Hawks (5-10) with two doubles, a single, and an RBI.
The Blue Devils (9-11) visit New Paltz for a three-game SUNYAC series this weekend starting with a doubleheader Saturday.
