Devils drop series opener at New Paltz

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- Fredonia will look to avenge a 6-3 loss Saturday to New Paltz when the teams meet for a SUNYAC baseball doubleheader at noon Sunday.

Fredonia led 1-0 Saturday on an bases-loaded single by Kyle Sherman (North Collins, N.Y./North Collins) with one out in the second inning. New Paltz's Conor Donachie pitched out of the jam with a strikeout and a ground out. Fredonia also loaded the bases in the seventh inning, this time with two outs, yet only managed one run.

A sacrifice fly and three straight run-scoring hits with two outs gave New Paltz a 4-1 lead in the third inning off losing pitcher Zachary Jordon (Akron, N.Y./Akron). The Hawks added an unearaned run in the fourth and an insurance run in the eight off Jordon, who pitched a complete game with six strikeouts.

Kevin Yirinec (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) accounted for two Blue Devil runs. He homered to center off Donachie in the fourth inning and drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh. The Blue Devils trailed 5-3 at the time. New Paltz reliever Andrew DiNardo pitched out of the bases-loaded jam, followed by two scoreless innings. to earn the save.

Tyler Bell had two hits and two RBI for the Hawks, who'll enter Sunday's doubleheader with a 5-5 conference record, compared to 2-5 for the Blue Devils.
