BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- Fredonia won a 10-9 thriller over Brockport in the second game of Friday's SUNYAC softball doubleheader.
Brockport led 7-6 before the Blue Devils scored four runs in their final at-bat. Consecutive singles by
Cassidy Herman, pinch-hitter
Lindsey Forness, and
Leanne Villani produced the tying run. A sacrifice fly by
Khee Nance put Fredonia on top, 8-7.
Alyssa Morgan followed with an RBI single. Pinch-hitter
Mallory Mecca tacked on the final run with a two-out RBI single.
The Blue Devils needed every single run. A two-run homer by Brockport's Delaney Buckley cut the Fredonia lead to one run no outs. After the next batter singled off winning pitcher
Megan DeGroat,
Emily Shellenberger came on in relief. Shellenberger wasted no time earning a save. She induced a double-play grounder on her first pitch, a hard roller to Morgan at second, who tagged the runner and threw to first.
The next batter sent a liner back up the middle. Nance, at shortstop, made a lunging grab for the final out.
Nance led the game off with a homer, later doubled and singled, scored two runs, and had two RBI. Morgan also had three hits, including a double, and two RBI, and
Katelyn Dennis had a three-run double as part of Fredonia's five-run third inning.
The win kept the Blue Devils alive for the sixth and final playoff spot, although they have no room for error. They trail both Buffalo State and Oswego and will need both teams to lose twice Saturday just to have a chance. Fredonia will have to do its part by sweeping a doubleheader at Geneseo, scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
The Blue Devils put themselves in the must-win situation by losing Friday's opener to Brockport, 6-2, after leading 2-0 early. Morgan and Forness had the Fredonia RBI, and
Nikki Lent had two hits.
