GENESEO, N.Y. -- Fredonia's bid to make the SUNYAC softball tournament ended with a 1-0 loss to Geneseo in 10 innings Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Devils season ended later in the day with a 7-3 loss in the second game of the doubleheader.
Freshman right-hander
Emily Shellenberger (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower Catholic) and Geneseo's Mikayla Moore matched zeroes until the Knights scored an unearned run in the last of the ninth.
Shellenberger finished with a complete-game six-hitter while inducing 16 groundouts. The Blue Devils had just one hit -- a bunt single by sophomore
Nikki Lent (Yaphank, N.Y./Longwood) with one out in the top of the first. Moore buckled down the rest of the way, striking out eight and allowing only three Fredonia runners to advance as far as second base.
The loss ended Fredonia's chance of mounting a final-day charge into the six-team bracket. The Blue Devils entered the day having to win twice and get help.
The Blue Devils collected 11 hits in Game 2 -- two each by freshman
Leanne Villani (Lake Grove, N.Y./Lake Ronkonkoma), senior
Alyssa Morgan (Homer, N.Y./Homer), and freshman
Cassidy Herman (Maybrook, N.Y./Valley). One of Morgan's hits was an RBI double.
Morgan,
Lindsey Forness (Allegany, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone),
Madeline Medina (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg),
Megan Medina (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg),
Kim Lotocki (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier),
Aldyn Carlson (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk), and
Izzy Simon (Macedon, N.Y./Penfield) were appearing in their final collegiate game.
The Blue Devils finished 11-23 overall and 5-13 in the conference.
