Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Early deficit too much to overcome

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Fredonia's rally fell just short Tuesday as host Nazareth held on for an 11-10 women's lacrosse victory.

The Blue Devils dug out of a seven-goal deficit and held the Golden Flyers to one goal in the second half, yet were unable to score the equalizer.

The loss dropped Fredonia to 4-4 while Nazareth improved to 6-3.

Fredonia never led in the non-conference game and fell behind 10-3 before scoring the final goal of the first half and the first five goals of the second half.

Audrey Yokopovich (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) scored twice while Kristie Kleine (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia), Jade Williams (Tully, N.Y./Lafayette), Katie Miller (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg), and Samantha Spiess (Fairport, N.Y./Penfield) had a goal each during the rally. The goal by Spiess with 10:31 left cut the Fredonia deficit to 10-9.

Hailey DeVona scored her third goal of the game with 7:45 remaining to give Nazareth an 11-9 lead, Kleine's second goal of the game -- and 22nd of the season -- came with 3:48 left. Nazareth goalkeeper Brianna Rizzari made three saves down the stretch to preserve the win for her team.

Rizzari finished with 10 saves while Fredonia's Nicole Burrows (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) made 11.

Yokopovich led Fredonia with three goals, seven ground balls, and five caused turnovers. Miller had three draw controls.

The Blue Devils entertain defending SUNYAC and NCAA Division III champ Cortland at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Red Dragons are ranked No. 1 in the nation.
