FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia women's lacrosse team held the advantage through the first 10 minutes against No. 1 ranked Cortland on Saturday before eventually falling to the Red Dragons, 19-9.
After
Audrey Yokopovich (Webster, N.Y. / Webster Thomas) scored at the 9:52 mark in the first period to put the Blue Devils ahead 5-4, Cortland went on a six-goal run that spanned over 20 minutes to go up 10-5. It was a run from which the Blue Devils wouldn't recover as the Red Dragons poured on nine more goals, including five in the final five minutes of play.
It was Cortland's 50th straight regular-season win in the SUNYAC. The Red Dragons and are now 17-0 in the all-time series against the Blue Devils.
Fredonia ended up with two goals each from Yokopovich,
Katie Miller (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg),
Kristie Kleine (Cazenovia, N.Y. / Cazenovia), and
Samantha Spiess (Fairport, N.Y. / Penfield).
The Blue Devils will play two more nationally-ranked opponents this week at home. They'll face No. 16 Brockport on Tuesday at 4 p.m. and No. 14 St. John Fisher Thursday at 5 p.m.
