Behrend blanks Blue Devils for 'Cup'

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Penn State Behrend gained control of the Interstate 90 Cup with a 3-0 win over Fredonia in NCAA Division III baseball at Ludwig Field.

The Blue Devils collected seven hits, but never more than one in an inning, while Penn State Behrend used timely hits to score all its runs in the first of two games this season between the non-conference rivals.

Fredonia freshman Kevin Yirinec (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) was on base four straight times -- a double, a single, and two walks -- yet was erased once and was left stranded the other three times. Michael Prentice (West Seneca, N.Y./St. Francis) added a double.

Overall, the Blue Devils stranded nine runners. They had runners in scoring position in the first, second, fourth, sixth, and seventh innings.

Fredonia freshman right-hander Ben Atkinson (Syracuse, N.Y./Syracuse) started and pitched two scoreless innings. He was followed to the mound by junior right-hander Lucas Schaefer (Depew, N.Y./St. Mary's), sophomore right-hander Bailey Gauthier (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee), and junior righth-hander Zach Lyman (Belmont, N.Y./Genesee Valley). Schaefer (1-1) was tagged with the loss.

Freshman right-hander Sean Rutkosky pitched six scoreless innings to earn his first collegiate win for Behrend. Scott Sada pitched up the save with 2 1/3 inning of scoreless relief. Sada also doubled and singled.

David Boehme and Brandon Bergstrom had two hits, one run scored, and one RBI each for the Lions -- the No. 5 hitting and No. 10 scoring team in NCAA Division III.

The teams meet again April 25 in Erie, Pa., when again the Interstate 90 Cup will be up for grabs. In the meantime, the Blue Devils turned their attention to this weekend -- weather permitting -- and a three-game SUNYAC series with Oneonta. Friday's single game is slated for 3 p.m. .with a Saturday doubleheader scheduled for noon.
