CLERMONT, Fla. – Fredonia scored early, then hung on, for an 8-5 win Thursday over Worcester State on the Blue Devils' final day at the Spring Games.
Stevens defeated the Blue Devils, 5-2, earlier Thursday.
Madeline Medina (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) and
Kelly Losito (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) each knocked in three runs and senior right-hander
Aldyn Carlson (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk) pitched a complete-game five-hitter in the get-away game at Hancock Park.
Fredonia jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Singles by Losito and
Alyssa Morgan (Homer, N.Y./Homer) preceded Medina's opposite-field sinking liner which bounced past the Worcester State left fielder and allowed both runners to score.
The Blue Devils added five runs in the second. The rally included singles by
Maddy Stavish (Olean, N.Y./Olean), a two-run double by Losito, and RBI double by
Lindsey Forness (Allegany, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone), an RBI single by Morgan, an RBI double by
Katelyn Dennis (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder), and an RBI single by Medina, who was 3 for 3 in the game..
Fredonia added an insurance run in the sixth when
Leanne Villani (Lake Grove, N.Y./Lake Ronkonkoma) was hit by a pitch, stole second, went to third on a throwing error, and scored on an infield out by Losito.
Carlson held Worcester State hitless through 4 2/3 innings. She then yielded consecutive singles leading to one run. A two-out error plated two more. Worcester State made things interesting with three runs in the last of the sixth. Carlson closed out the Florida trip with a 1-2-3 seventh.
Fredonia improved to 4-8 on its Florida trip.
In Thursday's 8 a.m. start, Fredonia took a 2-0 lead into the fifth inning behind sophomore right-hander
Megan DeGroat (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall) and a two-run first inning which included a single by Forness, a walk to Morgan, a double off the fence by Dennis, and an error.
Defense also figured into Fredonia's early lead. Centerfielder
Erin Mushtare (Oneonta, N,Y./Oneonta) threw out a runner at the plate in the first inning and made a diving catch in short right to end the second. Dennis also threw across the diamond from first to nail a runner trying to advance to third on an infield out.
Stevens took advantage of three Fredonia errors to tie the score 2-2 in the fifth. Carlson relieved DeGroat with two on and one out in the sixth and retired the first batter she faced before Katherine Tirabassi cracked a three-run homer on a 3-2 count deep to left for what proved to be the game-winning hit.
Christine LaRochelle earned the win for Stevens with three innings of scoreless relief. The Ducks improved to 7-1 with the win.
Fredonia plays its home opener next Tuesday when it entertains Allegheny in a doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m.
