FREDONIA, N.Y. -- It was an afternoon of firsts Wednesday for Fredonia Blue Devil softball.
The first home game of the season. The first game in 20 days -- due to poor weather since the Blue Devils' return from Florida on March 25.
In the first game of the doubleheader vs. Oswego, sophomore outfielder
Lauren Pixley (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) hit her first collegiate homer. It accounted for the only runs in a 14-2 SUNYAC loss.
The second game of the doubleheader had more firsts -- including the Blue Devils' first SUNYAC win of the season, 4-3. They improved to 5-9 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
Freshman right-hander
Emily Shellenberger (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower Catholic) pitched a complete-game eight-hitter. When the final out was recorded, she jumped it the air -- a fitting celebration after her first collegiate win.
Shellenberger's lone blemish came in the third inning. The Lakers (9-7, 3-3 SUNYAC) took a 3-0 lead on one swing of the bat, a homer to left by Alexis Nasca.
Fredonia's comeback began in the last of the third.
Nikki Lent (Yaphank, N.Y./Longwood) dribbled a ball down the first-base line and eluded the tag for a single.
Alyssa Morgan (Homer, N.Y./Homer) made it 3-1 with a double to left-center to score Lent.
Kim Lotocki (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) walked leading off the Fredonia fourth. She scored when freshman
Kelly Losito (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads), who had earlier entered the game as a pinch-runner, homered to right-center -- her first four-bagger as a collegian.
Two batters later, pinch-hitter
Khee Nance (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk) delivered the deciding blow -- a line-drive homer down the line in left. It was Nance's first homer as a Blue Devil on her first day in a Fredonia uniform. A transfer from Mercyhurst University, Nance missed all 12 games in Florida due to an injury. She appeared in Wednesday's first game as a pinch-hitter.
The opening theme of the day was not all about firsts. Instead, it was also about lasts -- in a way -- as the seven Fredonia seniors were recognized between games of the doubleheader. They were Lotocki, Morgan, twin sisters Madeline and
Megan Medina (Hamburg, N.Y/Hamburg),
Aldyn Carlson (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk),
Lindsey Forness (Allegany, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone), and
Izzy Simon (Macedon, N.Y./Penfield).
Next up for the Blue Devils is a SUNYAC home doubleheader Thursday vs. Cortland. The first game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
