Two foes take down Blue Devils

CLERMONT, Fla. -- Fredonia heads into its final day in Florida looking to rebound from a pair of lopsided losses Wednesday at The Spring Games.

The Blue Devils fell to 3-7 following losses to Thomas (Maine), 11-2, and Loras, 13-2, at Hancock Park. Both games were stopped after five innings.

Alyssa Morgan (Homer, N.Y./Homer) had four hits on the day -- all singles -- to raise her Florida batting average to .419 over 10 games (13 of 31) with two games Thursday: 8 a.m. vs. Stevens and 10 a.m. vs. Worcester State. Both games are back at Hancock Park.

Against Thomas, the Blue Devils fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first, then rallied for two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Lindsey Forness (Allegany, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) walked, Morgan singled, and Katelyn Dennis (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) walked to load the bases. Forness scored when Madeline Medina (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) dropped an oppositve-field single into left. Morgan scored on a sacrifice fly toby Cassidy Herman (Maybrook, N.Y./Valley).

The Fredonia offense stalled the rest of the way.

The Blue Devils took a 1-0 lead on Loras before the roofed caved in. Forness singled, went to second on a sacrifice by Herman, and scored on an infield error. Loras sent 18 batters to the plate in the last of the second and scored 12 runs -- all unearned -- to turn the game into a rout.

Fredonia's second run came in the fourth. Pinch-hitter Mallory Mecca (Derby, N.Y./Eden) banged a deep fly off the center-field fence for a double. Pinch-runner Nikki Lent (Yaphank, N.Y./Longwood) advanced to third on an infield out and scored on a wild pitch.

The losing pitchers on the day were senior right-hander Aldyn Carlson (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk) and freshman right-hander Emily Shellenberger (Philadephia, Pa./Little Flower Catholic).
