CLERMONT, Fla. -- Fredonia earned its first softball win of 2016 season by outlasting Ripon, 9-6, on Legends Field No. 3 at the National Training Center.
One day after struggling offensively, the Blue Devils (1-3) collected 12 hits in their second of two games Friday. They opened the day with a 7-6 loss to Lawrence in eight innings.
Katelyn Dennis (Webster, N.Y. / Webster Schroeder) and
Lindsey Forness (Allegeny, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) were Fredonia's top hitters with two hits in each game. Freshman right-hander
Erika Whitney (Harpursville, N.Y. / Harpursville) earned her first collegiate pitching win while senior right-hander
Aldyn Carlson (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk) pitched a scoreless seventh against Ripon to get the save.
The Blue Devils scored two runs in each of the first three innings against Ripon. A lead-off walk to
Leanne Villani (Lake Grove, N.Y. / Lake Ronkonkoma), an RBI double by Forness, a double by
Alyssa Morgan (Homer, N.Y./Homer), and an RBI single by Dennis plated the first two run in the first. Ripon scored twice to forge a 2-2 tie before Fredonia took the lead for good in the top of the second.
Kim Lotocki (Hamburg, N.Y. / Frontier) singled to lead off the inning, she was sacrificed to second by
Sarah Cuillo (Blasdell, N.Y. / Frontier), and scored on a two-out double by Villani. Forness followed with an RBI single to give the Blue Devils a 4-2 lead.
Singles by Dennis and
Erin Mushtare (Oneonta, N.Y./Oneonta) and a walk to Cuillo preceded a two-run single by freshman
Kelly Losito (Horseheads, N.Y. / Horseheads), her first collegiate hit and runs batted in. Fredonia added an insurace run in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Morgan singled, stole second, and scored on a single by
Cassidy Herman (Maybrook, N.Y. / Valley) in the fourth. A double by Lotocki, who advanced to third on an error, and a walk to
Izzy Simon (Macedon, N.Y. / Penfield) set up a double steal, before Villani ripped her second RBI double of the game.
Whitney worked into the fifth inning and left with a three-run lead. Freshman right-hander
Jessica Merle (Portland, N.Y./Brocton) pitched out of jams in the fifth and sixth innings prior to Carlson closing out the win with a 1-2-3 seventh. The loss dropped Ripon to 0-9.
Earlier in the day, Lawrence used the long ball to erase a 4-0 deficit to take a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh. The Blue Devils forced extra innings with a run in the last of the seventh.
Mallory Mecca (Derby, NY / Eden) reached on an error in her first collegiate at-bat. Losito came on as a pinch-runner. She was sacrificed to second by
Lauren Pixley (Hamburg, N.Y. / Frontier), went to third on a single by Villani, and scored on a single by Morgan.
Tiebreaking rules were enforced with a runner placed on second base to start the inning. The Vikings (1-1) scored twice in the top of the eighth, while the Blue Devils managed just one run on a run-scoring double by Forness. The tying run was stranded at second base.
Freshman right-hander
Emily Shellenberger (Philadelphia, Pa. / Little Flower Catholic) was tagged with the loss in relief of starter Carlson, who left the game after yielding a two-run, go-ahead homer by Meg Krautsch in the seventh. Krautsch also had two doubles, accounting for three of Lawrence's eight extra-base hits. Maddie MacLean homered and doubled.
Off Saturday, the Blue Devils play twice Sunday -- at 9 a.m. vs, Scranton and 11 a.m. vs. Rochester Institute of Technology. Both games are at Hancock Park.
