Devil bats silent in opening-day losses

CLERMONT, Fla. – Fredonia was blanked twice Thursday on the first day of the 2016 softball season.

Clarkson took the Blue Devils' season opener, 6-0, behind the three-hit pitching Jamie Bridge. Framingham State's Kelsi Gunarathne tossed a two-hitter over five innings to secure a 8-0 win in the second game.

Both games were played at Hancock Park.

Fredonia's lone bright spot offensively was freshman third baseman Cassidy Herman (Maybrook, N.Y. / Valley). She had hits in her first two collegiate at-bats in the opener against Clarkson, a single through the middle in the second inning and a double to left-center leading off the fifth.

Leanne Villani (Lake Grove, N.Y. / Lake Ronkonkoma) also collected her first collegiate hit, a single against Framingham State.

Senior right-hander Aldyn Carlson (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk) started and worked into the fifth inning in the season opener. Freshman right-hander Emily Shellenberger (Philadelphia, Pa. / Little Flower Catholic) fought through wildness in Game Two. Freshman right-hander Erika Whitney (Harpursville, N.Y./Harpursville) pitched in both games.

The Blue Devils will look to get the bats going Friday when they take on Lawrence at 1 p.m. and Ripon at 5 p.m. Both games are at the National Training Center.
