FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Cortland jumped on Fredonia in the opening two minutes en route to an 8-4 SUNYAC men's hockey win Saturday at Steele Hall.
The Red Dragons scored on their first three shots over a span of 1:35, a deficit from which the Blue Devils could not recover as they fell to 4-6-1 overall and 4-5-1 in the SUNYAC.Â
Cortland improved to 6-5-1 overall and 4-0 in the conference.
Mike Crowley led Cortland's attack with two goals and two assists while Dougie Elgstam and Casie Garrison each had a goal and an assist. Winning goaltender Drew Weigman was credited with 36 saves.
Fredonia's scoring began with a short-hander by
Todd Schauss (Terryville, Conn.) at 12:29 of the first period to cut the margin to 3-1. Consecutive goals in the second period by
Jacob Haynes (Whitby, Ont.) and
Bobby Polachek (Kingston, Ont.) pulled the Blue Devils within one, 4-3. Cortland gained a huge swing of momentum on a goal by Crowley with four seconds left in the second period, then added a goal by Garrison just 56 seconds into the third.
Kyle Jelinski (Edmonton, Alberta) completed Fredonia's scoring at the 13:54 mark of the third.
The Blue Devils are now off through the rest of the year. They return to action Jan. 6 at Stevenson are not back at home until facing Western New England on Jan. 13.Â
Members of Fredonia's 2006-07 team were recognized during a pre-game ceremony on the 10-year anniversary of their SUNYAC championship.
