Devils tame Wildcats

HAMBURG, N.Y. -- Fredonia led wire to wire in claiming an 80-69 victory over Cazenovia in men's college basketball action on Saturday. It was the consolation game of the Hilbert Hawks Tip-Off Tournament.

Ian Helps (Bronx, N.Y. / Greater New York Academy) and Richard De La Cruz (New York, N.Y. / Norman Thomas) had 17 points and seven rebounds apiece, and Brandon Hodge (Brentwood, N.Y. / Central Islip) added 15 to pace the Devils.

Fredonia jumped out to an 8-0 and led by as many as 21 points in the first half. A three pointer by Kareem Brown with 1:19 left put the Devils up 41-20.

They took a 41-24 lead into the intermission.
 
Cazenovia outscored Fredonia 45-39 in the second half. Fredonia's biggest lead was 27 following a De La Cruz jumper to make it 59-32 with 13:00 left to play.

Cazenovia made a game of it, pulling to within seven points with 1:32 left. An Ahmon Powell jumper cut the lead to 73-66 before the Devils closed out on a 7-3 run.
 
De La Cruz was three for three from long range, while the Devils converted seven of 12 attempts (58 percent) from the far side of the arc. They also shot 50 percent from the field, and shot 57 percent (21 of 37) from the line. 

Caz shot 39 percent from the floor, and was just one of 16 from three-point range. They converted 24 of 29 free throws (83 percent). 

The two teams combined to commit 53 fouls. Fredonia won the battle of the boards, 40-33.

Hodge was named to the All Tourney team for Fredonia. Mt. Union escaped with an 80-79 victory over Hilbert to claim the title.

The Devils have thier home opener at Tuesday in Steele Hall. The take on D'Youville at 7 p.m.
