FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia avoided a winless SUNYAC women's soccer season with a 2-0 home win Friday over New Paltz.
First-half goals by
Kaleigh Creeden (Rock Tavern, N.Y./Washingtonville) and
Olivia Coccitto (Spencerport, N.Y./Spencerport) and the shutout goalkeeping of
Kendall Owczarzak (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) allowed the Blue Devils to improve to 4-13-0 overall and 1-7-0 in the conference.
The loss dropped New Paltz to 1-14-2 and 0-8-0.
"It's nice to win," Fredonia Head Coach
Chris Case said. "We battled when we could have given up."
Playing with the wind at its back, Fredonia scored early and late in the first half for the game's only goals.
Creeden, a senior playing in her next to last game, scored on a play that began with a Fredonia corner kick late in the fifth minute. The ball was kicked around the box and was deflected by
Abby Price (Naples, N.Y./Naples) to Creeden, who scored from close range -- her first goal of the season and the first since her sophomore year.
Coccitto made it 2-0 on a free kick from outside the 18-yard line with exactly one minute left in the first half. It was the first collegiate goal for the freshman.
New Paltz had several nice runs against the wind in the first half, yet was unable to mount as much of an attack with the wind in the second half.
"I was worried about the wind," Case said, "but we played better and shut them down in the second half."
Owczarzak finished with four saves to record her third shutout of the season. Angela Ratka made seven saves in the New Paltz net.
Fredonia concludes its season Saturday when Oneonta visits University Stadium. The 1 p.m. kickoff will be preceded by Senior Day recognition.
