Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

St. Lawrence blanks Blue Devils

CANTON, N.Y. – Fredonia held tough against St. Lawrence before falling 3-0 in men's soccer Sunday.

Harry Copeland, Ryan Grant, and Tapshak Augustine scored for St. Lawrence, which reached the NCAA second-round the past two seasons. With wins over the Blue Devils on Sunday and Rowan on Saturday, the Saints (3-0) claimed the championship of the Lotto Classic at Sandy MacAllaster Field

The Blue Devils fell to 0-3 heading into the Blue Devil Classic next weekend at University Stadium. They face Penn State Behrend on Friday night.

"Although the stats don't show it," Fredonia head coach P.J. Gondek said, "we played well and are excited about getting home and getting our first win..St. Lawrence is a top 10 team every year and we played with them today on their home field." The Saints finished No. 16 in last year's final NCAA D-III poll.

Fredonia played close to the vest defensively, and it was reflected in the first half statistics. The Blue Devils held the Saints to three shots on goal and managed just one of their own. Yet one of the St. Lawrence shots found the back of the net.

With the game still scoreless, the Saints were awarded a free kick and Edward Gonzalez played a high cross into the box. The 6-foot, 5-inch Copeland leaped above everyone else and headed the ball over Fredonia goalkeeper Sammy Torrelli (Akron, N.Y.) in the 39th minute.

That was all St. Lawrence senior goalkeeper Ryan Roethel would need. He made two saves – on a total of three Fredonia shots – to notch his third shutout in as many games.

Torrelli finished with three saves and Austin Santor (Chazy, N.Y.) made two saves In relief over the final 13 minutes. The Fredonia goalkeepers faced 21 shots combined, eight of them on net.

Paul Reinis (Webster, N.Y.) had two of Fredonia's three shots.
