Devils win third in a row to start the season

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The women's volleyball team picked up their second and third wins of the season on Friday night on the first day of the Red Dragon Classic. In the early match the Blue Devils topped St. Lawrence in four sets (25-21. 25-21, 17-25. 25-22), then won a five set thriller against Lebanon Valley (21-25, 13-25, 25-22, 25-20, 15-10), which didn't end until 10:15 p.m.

Down two sets to none against Lebanon Valley, Head Coach Geoff Braun made four substitutions, including three new players to the 2015 team: Rachel Aiello (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / C.W. Baker), Kailey Falk (York, N.Y. / Our Lady of Mercy), and Hallie Christopher (East Amherst, N.Y. / Clarence). Christopher, stepping into the setter position, tallied 28 assists to lead the Devils back to a 3-2 victory.

"I'm really excited about two big wins today," Braun said "We have a lot of depth on our roster and we needed it today. To come back from down 0-2 against Lebanon Valley, a really strong serving and defensive team, showed a lot of grit. I was really proud of Hallie for going in and getting us a win."

In the Lebanon Valley match, libero Lauren Hokaj (Lancaster, N.Y. / St. Mary's of Lancaster) collected 26 digs, while Jessica DiChristopher (Cheektowaga, N.Y. / West Seneca East) and Paulina Rein (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / C.W. Baker) picked up 14 and 13 kills, respectively.

In the first set against St. Lawrence the Blue Devils collected 13 kills with only one error for a .333 hitting percentage. They would go on to win in four as Hokaj had 25 digs, Kelly Edinger (Rochester, N.Y. / Greece Athena) 39 assists, and Sara Madison (Rochester, N.Y. / Penfield) 12 kills.

On Saturday, Fredonia will match up with Wells College at 11 a.m. and the University of Rochester at 4 p.m. to wrap up the second day of the tournament.
