FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia rallied but were unable to score the equalizer Saturday in a 3-2 loss to Baldwin Wallace at the Blue Devil Clarion Hotel Classic.
Down 3-0 at halftime, the Blue Devils got goals from
Hunter Critchlow (Fairport, N.Y.) in the 79th minute and Paul Reins in the 88th minute during a driving rainstorm at University Stadium.
Parker Healy (East Aurora, N.Y.) nearly tied the game in the final seconds with a blast from straightaway. Baldwin Wallace goalkeeper Zach Haynes deflected the ball just over the crossbar.
Fredonia earned a corner kick and nearly scored off of it as time expired.
Bayton Thornburg, Patrick O'Malley, and Aaron Harden had the Baldwin Wallace goals while Haynes made four saves.
Sam Greco (Lockport, N.Y.) earned an assist for Fredonia with a corner kick into the box to set up Critchlow for a header. In net,
Austin Santor (Chazy, N.Y.) allowed one goal and made six saves in relief.
Healy and Greco were Fredonia's representatives on the Classic all-tourney team. Zach White and Jack Shirley were Baldwin Wallace's selections.
The Blue Devils fell to 0-5 this season while Baldwin Wallace improved to 2-4. The Yellow Jackets finished in third place in the four team field.
Penn State Behrend and Buffalo State played to a scoreless tie in Saturday's other game. Behrend was awarded the Classic title by virtue of the third tiebreaker -- most goals scored. The Lions scored four -- in a 4-2 victory Friday over Fredonia -- while the Bengals had two -- a 2-0 win Friday over Baldwin Wallace.
The Blue Devils wore light blue jerseys to symbolize the fight agaisnt prostate cancer on Fredonia Soccer Cancer Awareness Day.
Nazareth visits University Stadium for a non-conference game 7 p.m. Wednesday.
