MEADVILLE, Pa. --
Paulina Rein (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / C.W. Baker) collected 15 kills and a .267 hitting percentage, along with 27 digs, to lead the Blue Devils over the Allegheny Gators in the opening match of the 2015 season.
Fredonia won in four sets (25-23, 25-15, 18-25, 27-25), though it was not without difficultly at times
"It's good to get the first win under our belt," Head Coach
Geoff Braun said. "We played a bit timid and weren't executing on offense, but if we just focus on getting better every day we'll be fine."
The Blue Devils controlled both opening sets before the Gators rallied in the third, holding the Blue Devils to a negative hitting percentage (-.077). The Gators controlled the serve receive game in the fourth set, but an Allegheny hitting error ended the match in Fredonia's favor.
Kelly Edinger (Rochester, N.Y. / Greece Athena) finished the match with 47 assists and 17 digs, while
Jessica DiChristopher (Cheektowaga, N.Y. / West Seneca East) collected 16 kills and one block. Sophomore
Rachel Poirier (West Seneca, N.Y. / West Seneca West) had 14 digs in her first collegiate start.
The Blue Devils travel to Cortland, N.Y. on Friday and Saturday for the Red Dragon Classic. They will face two opponents on Friday who were regionally ranked in 2014: St. Lawrence at 5 p.m. and Lebanon Valley at 7 p.m.
