CORTLAND, N.Y. -- No. 1 seed and host Cortland defeated Fredonia, 14-5, Friday on the first day of the 2015 SUNYAC Baseball Tournament.
The No. 4 seed Blue Devils (14-18) never led against the Red Dragons (34-2), ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division III, whose Nick Hart led a 15-hit attack. Hart was 4 for 4 at the plate, had four RBI, scored two runs, and stole two bases.
Fredonia's offense consisted of five singles and a triple, the latter by
Ciro Frontale (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) as part of a four-run ninth inning. Frontale's hit drove in a run.
Brian Castonguay (Orchard Park, N.Y./Hamburg) had an RBI single and
Quinn Danahy (Buffalo, N.Y./Bishop TImon) an RBI groundout during the inning.
Vincent Sherman (North Collins, N.Y./North Collins),
Michael Prentice (West Seneca, N.Y./St. Francis), and
Erik Krohl (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) each had a single.
Ricky Mendiola (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) drove in the first Fredonia run with an infield groundout in the fourth inning.
Jake Harford (Silver Creek, N.Y./Silver Creek) was the Fredonia starter and losing pitcher. Cortland's Brandon Serio allowed one run on three hits in 7 1/3 innings to improve to 7-0 this season.
The Blue Devils will play again at 10 a.m. Saturday against either Brockport or Oswego with the winner advancing the loser going home.
