CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Fredonia's 2015 baseball season came to an end Saturday with a 9-5 loss to Oswego State in the SUNYAC Tournament at SUNY Cortland.
The Blue Devils (14-19) fell into a 6-0 hole before rallying with four runs in the seventh and one in the eighth. Eventually, the inability to come up with a game-changing hit proved their downfall. The Blue Devils left the bases loaded twice and two men on four times. Overall, they stranded 14 baserunners.
The Lakers (25-10) will face either Cortland or Brockport later Saturday.
Down 6-0 heading into the top of the seventh, the Blue Devils rallied for four runs on four hits and one Laker error.
Quinn Danahy (Buffalo, N.Y./Bishop Timon) and
Erik Krohl (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) got the inning started with back-to-back singles.
Vincent Sherman (North Collins, N.Y./North Collins) drew a one-out walk before
Kenny Johnston (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) drew a bases-loaded walk on a 3-2 pitch to force in the first Fredonia run.
A two-run single by
Ricky Mendiola (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) chased Oswego starting pitcher Brendyn Karinchak and cut the the Oswego State lead to 6-3.
Dan Cecilia (Utica, N.Y./Whitesboro) greeted relief pitcher Cody LaFlamme with an RBI single before LeFlamme retired the next to hitters to get out of the jam.
The Lakers countered with a run in the last of the seventh, only to have the Blue Devils threaten again in the top of the eighth. An error, wild pitch, walk, and hit batter loaded the bases with two outs. Mendiola then walked to force in Fredonia's fifth run. Mickey Putillo came on in relief and induced an infield groundout to end the inning.
Oswego State scored two runs in the last of the eighth to regain the momentum for good.
Karinchak improved to 7-2 while Putillo picked up his sixth save for the Lakers. Zachary Jordan (Akron, N.Y./Akron) started and took the loss for Fredonia to drop to 6-3.
Joe DiLeo (Williamsville, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) and
Bailey Gauthier (Camilus, N.Y./West Genesee) relieved.
