Devils drop inaugural 'Cup' game

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia baseball team dropped a 10-1 decision to visiting Penn State Behrend on Thursday.  The game was the first in the inaugural I-90 Cup series, the winner claiming the rights to the traveling trophy.

Both teams had six hits apiece, but it was three groundball double plays and a fateful second inning that was the Devils' undoing.

The Devils got the leadoff runner on in five of the five of the first seven innings, but saw them erased on twin killings three times.

In the second inning, Behrend ledoff with a pair of hits. A sacrifice bunt was mishandled and the Lions followed up with a two-run single. Following a strikeout, a walk and pair of errors, four more runs crossed the plate.

The Devil pitchers then settled in to retire 17 of the next 19 batters through the seventh inning -- the only runners reaching base via walk. Three walks and a hit batter led to four runs in the eighth for Behrend to seal the game.

Evan Carmello (Fredonia/Fredonia) came on in the ninth for Fredonia to strike out the side.  Six Fredonia pitchers combined to strikeout 11 batters in the game.

The Devils scored their only run in the sixth. With two out following a double play, Ricky Mendiola (Williamsville/Williamsville South) roped a double. Vincent Sherman (North Collins/North Collins) singled and Quinn Danahy (Buffalo/Bishop Timon) walked. Dan Cecilia (Utica/Whitesboro) plated the run on an infield hit before a strikeout ended the threat.

Sherman was the only Devil with a pair of hits. Danahy walked twice, and Erik Krohl (Camillus/West genesee) and Mike Prentice (West Seneca/St. Francis) each had a base hit and a walk.

Behrend improved to 9-4. The Devils (6-9) are scheduled to take on D'Youville in a twinbill on Friday at the 'Wig. Gametime is slated for 1:00 p.m.
