Blue Devils withstand Brockport comeback

BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- Behind seven strong innings from Zach Jordon, the Fredonia baseball team evened its SUNYAC record at 2-2 with a 7-6 win over Brockport. The game was played in Brockport, with the Devils the home team due to wet field conditions at Ludwig Field.

Jordon earned his fourth win of the season going seven innings, giving up one run and striking out two.

Fredonia started the scoring early, plating four runs in the bottom of the second inning. With two runners on following a wild pitch on a third strike and a single by Kenny Johnston, Quinn Danahy lined a single up the middle scoring Ricky Mendiola from second. Catcher Dan Cecilia was then drilled in the head to load the bases. Freshman Bailey Gauthier followed with a single plating Johnston. Ryan Carmody collected and RBI on a fielder's choice. The Devils' fourth run of the inning came when Ciro Frontale hit a long fly ball was misplayed by the leftfielder for a two-base error.

The Blue Devils added another run in the third on a solo homerun by Mendiola, his second of the season.

After reaching on an error in the bottom of the fourth, Gauthier stole second and third setting up a two-out, RBI single by Michael Prentice, giving the Devils a 6-0 lead.

The Devils scored their final run in the fifth inning. Mendiola led off the with a single to right field. Following a sacrifice bunt by Johnston, Danahy lined a double to right center scoring Mendiola.

In the top of the sixth, Brockport finally got on the board. Brendan Swayne doubled to left field following a two-out walk. 

Jordon pitched a scoreless seventh to end his night. He was replaced with Joe DiLeo.

The Eagles did not give in, adding three more runs in the eighth behind three hits and a Blue Devil error trimming the lead 7-4.

Brockport kept the pressure on into the ninth when Swayne hit a two-run single through the left side to make it a 7-6 game. With the tying run at first and two out, Jake Harford came in to replace DiLeo and earned his second save of the season, throwing three pitches to retire the final batter of the game on a fly ball to right.

Mendiola led the Devils with three hits. Johnston was two for two with a double and a walk.

The Blue Devils improved to 7-9 overall, while Brockport fell to 11-9 and 4-6 in the SUNYAC.

The Blue Devils are scheduled to be back in action Friday afternoon kicking off a four-day, six-game series against conference opponents New Paltz and Cortland. All games are home games for Fredonia.
