CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Preseason co-favorite Cortland dealt Fredonia its first two SUNYAC losses Sunday, 6-4 and 9-1.
The Blue Devils, winners of their first eight conference games, fell to 11-10 overall and 8-2 in the conference. Cortland improved to 17-7 overall and 7-1 in SUNYAC. The Red Dragons and Oneonta were the co-choices of conference coaches to win the SUNYAC championship. Fredonia was picked for seventh.
Fredonia's
Alyssa Morgan (Homer, N.Y./Homer) had three hits to lead a 10-hit attack in the opener. She had an RBI single in the first inning, an RBI infield ground out in the third, a one-out single in the fifth, and a one-out double in the seventh.
After Morgan doubled,
Jess Lauck (Buffalo, N.Y./Kemore West) singled -- her second hit of the game. A groundout put runners on second and third before Cortland reliever Jamie Lachall earned a save when she induced a game-ending line out to second by
Maggie Paras (Florida, N.Y./S.S. Seward).
Lindsey Forness (Allegany, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) had a two-run double in the Fredonia fifth. Paras also doubled for the Blue Devils.
Kelsey Gannett (Endwell, N.Y./Union-Endicott) was the losing pitcher. She allowed all six runs on nine hits to fall to 6-3 this season.
A three-run homer by Niki Barbato in the third inning broke a 1-1 tie and put Cortland up for good. Sarah Salamone improved to 4-1 in the circle.
Cortland rolled to a five-inning win in Game 2 as Alexandrea Flint yielded five hits. Kaleigh Churchill had three hits and three RBI and Carrie Stoddard two hits and three RBI to lead the Red Dragon offense.
The Fredonia offense was limited to five singles, including one more hit by Morgan and one more by Lauck.
Madeline Medina (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) drove in the only run with an infield groundout.
Aldyn Carlson (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk) was tagged with the pitching loss (1-4).
Fredonia has a scheduled doubleheader Wednesday at Alfred University, followed by SUNYAC home games against Oneonta and New Paltz next Friday and Saturday.
