FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia senior righthander
Kelsey Gannett (Endwell, N.Y./Union-Endcott) pitched a complete-game five-hitter to blank Oneonta 2-0 Friday in the first game of a SUNYAC softball doubleheader.
Oneonta bounced back to win the nightcap, 10-2, in five innings. The doubleheader split left Fredonia with a 9-3 conference record and 12-11 overall. Oneonta is 18-8 overall and 7-3 in the conference.
Gannett struck out five and walked three as she improved her record to 7-3 this season. She pitched in and out of trouble all game as Oneonta stranded 13 runners, including three in the fifth. After loading the bases with two outs, Gannett induced a foul out to the catcher and a flyout to center to get out of the jam.
The Red Dragons also put runners on first and second with one out in the seventh before the next two batters popped out to end the game.
The Blue Devils took a 1-0 in the second inning on two walks and an RBI double by
Madeline Medina (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg). They took a 2-0 lead in the third on an RBI single by
Lindsey Forness (Allegany, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone). Forness had two singles and
Nikki Lent (Yaphank, N.Y./Longwood) singled and doubled as part of a seven-hit attack.
In the second game, Oneonta jumped on freshman righthander
Megan Degroat (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall) for five unearned runs in the second inning and added five more unearned in the fifth, taking full advantage of four Blue Devil errors. The Red Dragons also pounded 13 hits combined off Degroat and reliever
Aldyn Carlson (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk).
The Blue Devils scored their only two runs in the third inning on a single by
Maddy Stavish (Olean, N.Y./Olean), a fielder's choice, and RBI single by
Alyssa Morgan (Homer, N.Y./Homer) and
Jess Lauck (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West).
Fredonia is back in action Saturday with a SUNYAC doubleheader vs. New Paltz starting at noon. It's also "Strike Out Cancer Day."
