Devils bring bats in home-opener

FREDONIA, N.Y. ---- The Fredonia baseball team played its home-opener at Ludwig Field Wednesday afternoon against Hilbert College, winning 17-1 and knocking out 20 hits.

Quinn Danahy (Buffalo/Bishop Timon) and Kenny Johnston (Buffalo/Kenmore West) led the attack with three hits apiece. The Devils also rapped seven doubles, with Johnston and Mike Prentice (West Seneca/St. Francis) getting two apiece.

Danahy added a career-high five RBI, and Vincent Sherman (North Collins/North Collins) and Johnston had three RBI each. Freshman Steve Zaprowski (Amherst/Williamsville South) was a perfect two-for-two, and Dan Cecilia (Utica/Whitesboro) had a pair of hits after missing the first 13 games of the season.

Zach Jordon (Akron/Akron) earned his third win this year going five innings, giving up two hits and striking out five without allowing a run. Thomas Morris (Syosset/Syosset), Matt Wilhelm (Amherst/Amherst), Joe Korszun (Schenectady/Monhassen) and Kyle Smith (Scottsville/Wheatland Chili) each threw one inning, and combined to allow one run on four hits.

The Devils are slated to take on Penn State Behrend at the 'Wig on Thursday at 2:00. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Behrend, but will be in Fredonia due to poor field conditions in Erie.
