CLERMONT, Fla. -- Fredonia's three-game winning streak came to an end Thursday with a 5-2 loss to Scranton at the Dot Richardson Spring Games.
Scranton broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the top of the third inning. The uprising consisted of three walks, one hit batter, two Fredonia errors, and just one hit -- and RBI double by Kaitlyn Pittsman.
Fredonia outhit Scranton, 10-6, with
Alyssa Morgan (Homer, N.Y./Homer) collecting three andÂ
Nikki Lent (Yaphank, N.Y. / Longwood) two. Each had a double.
Aldyn Carlson (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk) was the losing pitcher. She dropped to 0-3 this spring while the Blue Devils fell to 3-6 overall.
Megan Degroat (New Windsor, N.Y. / Cornwall) pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.
Fredonia took a 1-0 lead in the last of the first inning on singles by Lent and Morgan and a sacrifice fly by
Cherise Gunnell (Falconer, N.Y./Falconer). The Blue Devils tacked on their second run in the last of the sixth on a double by
Katelyn Dennis (Webster, N.Y,/Webster Schroeder) and an RBI single by
Lindsey Forness (Allegany, N.Y. / Allegany-Limestone).
Defensively, left-fielder
Lauren Pixley (Hamburg, N.Y. / Frontier) made a diving catch in short left-center in the fifth inning.
On Thursday night, the Blue Devils were leading 3-0 over Macalester when heavy rain began to fall and the game was suspended in the last of the third inning. Chances of the games resuming are slim. Instead, Fredonia will look toward its two final Florida games Friday -- vs. Bowdoin at 9 a.m. and St. Lawrence at 11 a.m. at the National Training Center.
